Man guilty in son's drowning

September 09, 2009|Dana Parsons

A Fullerton man was convicted Tuesday of drowning his 6-year-old son in a bathtub after learning that his wages would be garnished to pay support to his ex-wife and the boy.

Gideon Walter Omondi, 38, was convicted of first-degree murder for the September 2006 death of his son, Richie, who was spending the weekend with Omondi at his Fullerton apartment.

According to prosecutors, Omondi filled a tub with water, drowned his son and then placed him on a bed under the covers.

Two hours later, Omondi went to Fullerton police and told them he had killed his son, prosecutors said.

Omondi faces 32 years to life in prison. He pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity, and the sanity phase of the trial is set to begin today.

Drowned boy: A correction Wednesday, citing information that prosecutors recently provided to The Times, said that reports in 2006 and 2007 inaccurately gave drowning victim Richard Omondi's age as 4. Based on that information, the correction and an article last week reporting his father's murder conviction said that the boy was 6. Now prosecutors say he was indeed 4.
