A mild El Nino to get stronger

September 12, 2009|Times Wire Reports

A currently weak El Nino is expected to strengthen and last through winter, climate researchers have found.

The climate phenomenon is marked by warming of the central Pacific Ocean and changes in wind direction and air pressure that can affect weather around the world. El Nino can help suppress Atlantic hurricane activity.

National Weather Service forecasters said Pacific sea surface temperatures are 1.3 degrees to 1.8 degrees above normal.
