Fashion on and off screen at 'September Issue' and 'Coco before Chanel'

The crowds dressed up for the films showing in L.A. last week.

L.A. is never short on gala movie events and last week proved no different, with virtually back-to-back fashion-centric film screenings that attracted glamorous crowds of socialites, celebrities and style setters.

R.J. Cutler's documentary "The September Issue" was the center of attention Tuesday night at LACMA. The director spoke to a crowd including actresses Ginnifer Goodwin and Perrey Reeves, singer Kelly Rowland and boutique owner Cameron Silver, urging them to use Twitter or Facebook to spread their (positive) thoughts and reviews after seeing the movie, a documentary about Vogue magazine and its editor in chief, Anna Wintour. The crowd stuck around for a cocktail reception in the museum's courtyard, chattering about the film, which opened in theaters on Friday. Most of them seemed to be raving about Vogue creative director Grace Coddington's screen time as the movie's bright spot.

Wednesday night "Coco Before Chanel" hit the Silver Screen Theater inside the Pacific Design Center, where a lot of ladies clad in all things Chanel sauntered to their seats in sky-high heels. Director Anne Fontaine spoke with the film's Coco, actress Audrey Tautou, by her side. Curiously, Tautou was outfitted in Lanvin, not Chanel, but looked perfectly gamin and gorgeous in the simple cocktail dress and cropped haircut.

But she changed into a Chanel dress later in the evening for the after-party at Chanel's Robertson Boulevard boutique. Guests were apparently cuckoo for Coco: after seeing Fontaine's film about the designer's modest life pre-Paris they tried on fur-trimmed fall boots, slung quilted leather bags over shoulders and eyed cases full of layered necklaces. Talk about a rags-to-riches story.

"Coco Before Chanel" opens in theaters Sept. 25.
