September 17, 2009|Times Wire Reports

Union members have formally elected Richard Trumka the AFL-CIO's first new president in 14 years.

Trumka is pledging to usher in a more aggressive style and push the nation's largest labor federation to boost membership.

He was uncontested in his bid to replace John Sweeney, who is stepping down. Trumka had been Sweeney's top deputy and previously headed the United Mine Workers.
