Protests mark coup anniversary

September 20, 2009|Times Wire Reports

Thousands of demonstrators in Bangkok marked the anniversary of a 2006 coup, while rival protesters clashed with police and villagers near the Cambodian border.

Supporters of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who was ousted in the coup, rallied in the capital. More than 6,000 police officers were on hand to prevent rioting.

The alliance that led demonstrations culminating in the coup tried to march toward a temple near the Cambodian border, triggering clashes that left 17 people injured, according to hospitals. It demanded that the Thai government recover the territory, which is claimed by both countries.
