Sonoma Wine Country Weekend

Highlights: This oenophilic weekend is packed with luncheons, winemaker dinners, vineyard tours, tastings and a grand auction.

Gold Rush Days

When, where: Sept. 3-6, Old Sacramento

Highlights: Be transported to the 1850s and walk dirt roads, watch historical reenactments, pan for gold, take in period music or a street drama or make crafts.

Music, Gunslingers and Movies

When, where: Sept. 4, Calico Ghost Town

Highlights: Entertainment under the stars includes silver-screen hits (including a showing of "3:10 to Yuma"), short films and live music.

Scottish Highland Gathering & Games

When, where: Sept. 4 and 5, Alameda County Fairgrounds

Highlights: The 145th annual games promise pipe bands, dancing, heavy-lifting contests, soccer, rugby, nearly 100 clan tents, children's activities, a 1-mile kilt race and a British automobile display.

Cost: $18 a day; $27 for the weekend; $12 a day for seniors and children



Portland Pirate Festival

When, where: Sept. 18 and 19, Cathedral Park

Highlights: This celebration of maritime troublemakers will attempt to claim the Guinness record for the largest gathering of pirates. The event's eclectic offerings include a mustache competition, costumed reenactments, historical attractions, juggling, puppetry, a merchant market and ethnic foods.

Cost: $12 advance, $15 at the gate; $6 advance, $8 at the gate for children ages 3 to 12
