WHERE TO STAY

Just Inn, at Justin Winery, 11680 Chimney Rock Road, Paso Robles, Calif.; (805) 238-6932, www.justinwine.com. Three of Just Inn's romantic suites are in the vineyards and have marble baths and fireplaces. The Bordeaux suite is at the working winery. Rates start at $375 a night; full breakfast, bottle of wine and tour included.

Hotel Cheval, 1021 Pine St., Paso Robles, Calif.; (866) 522-6999, www.hotelcheval.com. Rooms at this lovely downtown hotel have gas fireplaces, soaking tubs and impossibly comfortable beds. Rates begin at $225 midweek; continental breakfast included.

WHERE TO EAT

Nothing leaves the exhibition kitchen of Artisan without Chef Chris Kobayashi's scrutinizing the mustard spaetzle or the ricotta gnocchi. Nearly everything served in this relaxed restaurant is local and organic. And absolutely everything is delicious. Entrees average $26.

Deborah's Room, at Justin Winery, 11680 Chimney Rock Road, Paso Robles, Calif.; (805) 238-6932, www.justinwine.com. This seriously romantic restaurant serves seriously sophisticated food. Five tables. About 50 votive candles. The perfect ratio. Five-course dinner $90. Wine pairing is an additional $45.

Thomas Hill Organics, 1305 Park St., Paso Robles, Calif. (behind the olive oil store); (805) 226-5888, www.thomashillorganics.com. All the food at Thomas Hill features produce from its organic farm. Lunch entrees average $12. Dinner entrees average $23. On warm days and evenings, you can sit outside in the charming courtyard.

Farmstand 46, 3750 Highway 46 W., Templeton, Calif.; (805) 239-3661, www.farmstand46.com. Gourmet. Organic. Very hip. Get it to go, or eat outside at one of its silver cafe tables. Made-to-order sandwiches average $9.

Tours of the grapevine nursery (including that guillotine-like grafting machine) are at 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. daily. Call ahead to reserve a place.
