German-born artist Eva Hesse's untimely death in 1970 cut short a career that ascended to unprecedented heights for a female artist at that time. For "Eva Hesse Spectres 1960," the Hammer brings together an ambitious series of early works from 1960, completed prior to the sculptural assemblages for which she would become best known. The small paintings, made when Hesse was 24, balance the psychologically fraught with the gestural, peopled with quasi-self-portraits and other amorphous, alien forms.
