Happening Tuesday: 'WTF' with Marc Maron

Also Allah-Las, Deerhunter, etc.

August 09, 2011

WTF Live Acerbic, idiosyncratic comedian Marc Maron brings his popular "WTF" podcast to the stage to celebrate the release of his new album, "This Has to Be Funny." As on the twice-weekly Internet show, Maron will riff and converse with his guests, who include Molly Shannon, Neil Hamburger and Jim Earl. Steve Allen Theater, 4773 Hollywood Blvd., L.A. 8 p.m. $10. (323) 666-4268.

Allah-Las The nostalgic local act, which weaves the sounds and feeling of mid-century California into its repertoire, continues its Tuesday night residency. Hear strains of surf rock, electrified folk and Sunset Strip backbeat in their set, and pine for a non-digital age. Farmer Dave, the Tyde and Tomorrow's Tulips support. The Echo, 1822 Sunset Blvd., Echo Park. 8:30 p.m. Free. (213) 413-8200.

Deerhunter The Atlanta band's "Halycon Digest" was widely regarded as the best of its career. Indebted to girl groups, '70s no wave and Bradford Cox's bleak-but-hopeful vocal presence, it's a defining document of a strange band making its most forceful statement yet. Wiltern, 3790 Wilshire Blvd., L.A. 8 p.m. $27.

Paul McCarthy In conjunction with the exhibit "Paul Thek: Diver, a Retrospective," art scholar Paul McCarthy will discuss Thek's work using his unique perspective and deep knowledge to probe a variety of cultural subjects, including the meaning of high art and its place in popular culture. Hammer Museum, 10899 Wilshire Blvd., L.A. 7 p.m. Free. (310) 443-7000;
