August 12, 2011

The Decemberists On "The Hazards of Love" (2009), frontman Colin Meloy and his merry band of Pacific Northwest hucksters created a medieval rock opera. The band's latest album, "The King Is Dead," takes the opposite tack, exploring Americana, a much more simple, rustic format. The right players are on the record with Meloy — R.E.M.'s Peter Buck contributes guitar and mandolin, and Gillian Welch provides vocals that go a long way in establishing some measure of restraint here. Greek Theatre, 2700 N. Vermont Ave., L.A. 7:30 p.m. $32.50-$42.50.

Sandra Bernhard On her new live comedy album, "I Love Being Me, Don't You?," the stand-up careens from acidic commentary about Angelina Jolie's lips to her daughter's recent bat mitzvah gift wish — a Japanese toilet — to how kabbalah "went all wrong." Now, Bernhard will perform some of that material live — along with plenty of new comedy and music. REDCAT, 631 W. 2nd St. 8:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday; 7 p.m. Sunday; 8:30 p.m. Aug. 17-20; 7 p.m. Aug. 21. (213) 237-2800. $45-$50.

Brew at the Zoo Generally, craft beer is a sign of refinement, but this is a safe way to indulge it alongside more animal instincts. Try samples of craft beers and pub food, listen to local bands and stalk your favorites animals at the zoo, including the Elephants of Asia exhibit. L.A. Zoo, 5333 Zoo Drive, L.A. 6 p.m. $40.

An Evening on Ice Past, present and future figure skating champions converge for a night of spins, jumps and fancy footwork, all in the name of charity. Thrill to the athletic skills of U.S. ladies champion Rachael Flatt, eight-time British men's champion Steven Cousins, U.S. silver medalist Richard Dornbush and more than 20 others. Pickwick Ice Center, 1001 W. Riverside Drive, Burbank. 7:30 p.m. $45-$150. (818) 845-5300.
