For the record

August 24, 2011

Underrated/Overrated: In the Underrated/Overrated feature in the Aug. 21 Calendar section, an item about the marketing campaign for FX's "American Horror Story" indicated that participants could sign up friends and family for an in-home surprise scare from the show's cast. People may sign up only themselves for this experience.

Iranian pop music: An article in the Aug. 21 Arts & Books section about pre-revolutionary Iranian pop music described the santur as being an instrument like a violin. It more closely resembles a hammered dulcimer.

Leonard Slatkin: An article in the Aug. 21 Arts & Books section about conductor Leonard Slatkin said he graduated from Hollywood High School; it was Los Angeles High School. Also, Slatkin misspoke when he said he gave up his title as music director while the Detroit Symphony Orchestra was on strike in 2010. He remains in that position.

Stadium violence: An article in the Aug. 22 LATExtra section about violence at Saturday night's 49ers-Raiders preseason football game misspelled the first name of the San Francisco Giants fan who was beaten in March outside Dodger Stadium. He is Bryan Stow, not Brian.

Fitness: In the Aug. 22 Health section, a column on how vanity can encourage exercise said that Bill Pearl had won the Mr. Olympia bodybuilding title five times. He has won the Mr. Universe title four times; he has never won the Mr. Olympia title.
