About Stanford: In the program's best season ever, the Cardinal lost only once — to Oregon, which is playing for the national title. Although the Pac-10 runners-up were challenged by USC and Arizona State, they easily handled pretty much everyone else on their schedule.

About Virginia Tech: The Hokies became the first team in Division I-A history to win 11 consecutive games after losing two to open the season. The last of those wins was in the ACC title game against Florida State. Senior quarterback Tyrod Taylor was ACC player of the year.
