Happening Tuesday: 'Fantastic Planet' and more

January 04, 2011

ART

Illuminated Reflections Los Angeles-based artists Bill Aron and Victor Raphael have teamed to create a unique exhibit of metal-leafed photographs for the Skirball Cultural Center. In keeping with the Skirball's mission as a Jewish cultural institution, many of the photographs depict Jewish themes, but the series touches on a number of other cultures as well. The exhibition opens on Tuesday, but all exhibitions are free to the public on Thursdays. Skirball Cultural Center, 2701 N. Sepulveda Blvd., L.A. 12-5 p.m. $10. http://www.skirball.org.

MOVIES

"A Small Act" This award-winning documentary tells the story of Chris Mburu, a young man from Kenya, and his journey from an impoverished village to becoming a Harvard Law School graduate and a human rights lawyer for the United Nations. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with director Jennifer Arnold and producers Patti Lee and Jeffrey Soros. Hammer Museum, 10899 Wilshire Blvd., Westwood. 7 p.m. Free. (310) 443-7000. hammer.ucla.edu.

"Fantastic Planet" The psychedelic 1973 sci-fi animated film offers plenty of mesmerizing sights, including giant blue humanoids, surreal alien landscapes and imaginative technology (incidentally, it's nothing like "Avatar"). But the real sensory draw of this screening is a live performance of Alain Goraguer's score by the local band Jesus Makes the Shotgun Sound. Silent Movie Theatre, 611 N. Fairfax Ave., L.A. 8 p.m. $14. (323) 655-2510. http://www.cinefamily.org.
