BOOSTER SHOTS: Oddities, musings and news from the
health world

Some health claims are just claims (Take notes, Kobe Bryant and Kevin Durant)

January 06, 2011|By Mary Forgione, Tribune Health

Can probiotics in yogurt prevent colds? Do fish oil vitamins make kids smarter? Here’s an expert who looks at the nuttiest health claims of 2010.

Dr. Rahul Jandial of KTLA-TV, Channel 5, in Los Angeles, takes a thumbs-up, thumbs-down approach to those questions and others in this video (above). "We have to be careful with the information we see on the Web as well as on the shelves and on the bottles," Jandial warns.

Such health claims, of course, will continue in the new year. Indeed they already have. Jandial takes on the so-called power bands, worn by Kobe Bryant, Kevin Durant and others, in this video.

So do your homework and don't fall for slick-sounding sure-fire "cures" -- they'll likely wind up on next year's nuttiest claims list.
