Underwater Parks Day

Highlights: Kids learn about marine environments while seeing underwater life during this third annual event. Child-oriented activities include a conservation expo with hands-on exhibits.

James Beard Foundation Celebrity Chef Tour

When, where: Jan. 21 and 22, Mauna Lani Bay Hotel & Bungalows

Highlights: An elaborate farm-to-table-themed dinner Jan. 22 is the pièce de résistance of this food-and-wine weekend, with celebrity chefs preparing and introducing courses; wine and cocktail pairings accompany the presentation. The event also includes a wine tasting Jan. 21.

Cost: $300 for both nights; $250 if attending only the dinner



The Buffalo Story

When, where: Jan. 21-23, Yellowstone Assn. headquarters, Gardiner, Mont.

Highlights: This field seminar, led by Yellowstone's bison expert, will help attendees learn about bison behavior, ecology and conservation, and includes hiking, snowshoeing or skiing of up to 5 miles a day, as well as wildlife-viewing opportunities.

Hopi Agricultural Expo

Highlights: This celebration of Hopi farming heritage includes educational demonstrations, dance performances, Native American foods and an exhibit of photos that date to 1890.

Napa Valley Restaurant Month

When, where: Through Jan. 31, various restaurants

Highlights: Sample some of Napa's best food at a steep discount. Thomas Keller's Bouchon Bistro, for example, is offering a three-course prix-fixe dinner for $25, while others offer half-off wine. More than 30 chefs are participating in this first annual event, part of California Restaurant Month.
