Nova: In the new three-part series "Making Stuff," technology reporter David Pogue investigates how scientists are creating revolutionary new materials. In the opener, he visits with a scientist who is splicing goat and spider DNA in an effort to mass-produce spider silk (9 p.m. KOCE).

Blue Bloods: Jackie and Danny (Jennifer Esposito, Donnie Wahlberg) investigate the murder of a high-end escort whose body is found floating in the river. Tom Selleck stars in this new episode (10 p.m. CBS).

Nova scienceNow: The season premiere episode "Can We Make It to Mars?" details the challenges facing embarking on a trip to Mars, which could take three years (10 p.m. KOCE).

Top Chef: The elimination challenge requires the chefs to open eateries under the stars in New York that will exist for one night only (10 p.m. Bravo).

Hot in Cleveland: Elka reunites with an old friend; the ladies struggle to raise bail in the season premiere (10 p.m. TV Land).

Retired at 35: Johnathan McClain stars as a high-powered executive who walks away from his job and moves in with his parents (George Segal, Jessica Walter) in a Florida retirement community in this new series (10:30 p.m. TV Land).


College basketball: Duke at North Carolina State (4 p.m. ESPN); Texas A&M at Texas (6 p.m. ESPN2).
