California budget plan highlights

The budget that Democrats in the Legislature plan to pass Wednesday proposes new taxes and fees as well as cuts. Here are some of them.

Taxes, fees

Higher local sales tax -- $900 million

Higher car registration fee -- $300 million

Online sales tax -- $200 million

Fee on fire-zone residents -- $160 million


Local law enforcement program cuts -- $500 million*

University of California and California State University reductions -- $300 million

Court cuts -- $150 million

*could be offset by a tax hike, if GOP agrees
