REI Adventures, the travel wing of the outdoors co-op, is marking 25 years of leading trekking and sightseeing trips around the world. To celebrate, the company is taking 25% off the cost of selected trips -- from a strenuous trek to the base of Mt. Everest to bicycling in France's Loire Valley.

The deal: REI Adventures discounted rates are available only to members ($20 for a lifetime membership) and are based on double occupancy. These are trips for folks who like to trek, bicycle, kayak and hike; some are strenuous, some "relaxed" or easy. Here are some samples of the discounted rates.

Prices are per person, excluding tax and airfare. Tours include guides, lodgings (from hotels to mountain refuges to tents, depending on the trip) and most meals. Here are some samples:

* Machu Pichu, Peru: Inca Trail Trek, Sept. 23-Oct. 1, $2,325

* Everest Base Camp Trek: Nov. 13-Dec. 1, $2,175

* East Africa Safari: Sept. 11-19, $2,775

* Alaska Wilderness & Wildlife Kayaking, July 9-16, $2,250

* Loire Valley Cycling: July 31-Aug. 5, $1,949

When: The discount is good on given trip dates and is subject to availability.

Tested: These trips can be reserved online or by phone. Check the website for full itineraries, qualification requirements, gear required, general information and more. I called REI to check on availability and was told these trips still have spaces available.
