Southern Section Division 1AA girls' final pits Mater Dei against Brea Olinda

The top two girls' teams in the nation, according to ESPN, renew their rivalry at the Anaheim Convention Center.

March 04, 2011

Van Nuys Montclair Prep (23-8) vs. Chatsworth Sierra Canyon (24-5), 5 p.m. at Santa Ana Mater Dei — These two Alpha League teams split in league play, but Sierra Canyon won, 68-51, on Feb. 8 and has the physical advantage with a group of talented young players, led by sophomore guard Jahmel Taylor (21.6 points). Montclair Prep, going for its fifth section title, has to deal with Sierra Canyon's full-court press. That means point guard Trey Dickerson will be the key.

Santa Ana Mater Dei (28-1) vs. Brea Olinda (29-0), 8:45 p.m. at Anaheim

Convention Center — In the most highly anticipated girls' game of the season, Mater Dei, ranked No. 1 in the nation by ESPN, faces No. 2 Brea Olinda. The Orange Country powerhouses, which won championships in separate divisions the last two years, are each vying for their third consecutive title. The Ladycats and the Monarchs met the last two years in the Southern California Regional Division 2 Finals, Brea Olinda winning in 2009 and Mater Dei in 2010. The rivalry runs deep and at any given point there should be 10 players on the court who are headed to Division I universities.
