Yuma Lettuce Days

When, where: March 11-13, Quartermaster Depot State Historic Park

Highlights: America's winter vegetable capital pays homage to the leafiest of greens. More than 40,000 attendees are expected for tastings, meals, cooking demos, live entertainment, local tours, tractor rides, kids' activities and a vendor marketplace.

Taste of Yountville

When, where: March 19, Washington Street

Highlights: This Napa Valley block party presents tastings from the town's acclaimed restaurants and wineries. The annual event also features chef demos, art tours and a peek at the French Laundry's two-acre garden.

Science Family Day

When, where: March 19, Balboa Park

Highlights: About 20 museums and cultural institutions offer family-friendly science-related activities, workshops and special programs to kick off the weeklong San Diego Science Festival, which culminates March 26 with a free Science Expo at Petco Park.

Cost: Free for ages 17 and younger with a paid adult ticket at participating museums; some museums will have free admission for everyone.

Hoot & Howl

When, where: March 26, Happy Hollow Park & Zoo

Highlights: To celebrate its 50th year, Happy Hollow is hosting an adults-only fundraiser, a casual evening of music, food and animal encounters.
