Detroit Lions running back Jerome Harrison was scheduled for surgery for a brain tumor Friday, according to a report in the Detroit Free Press.
Harrison's agent, Mitch Frankel, did not immediately respond to text messages from the Detroit newspaper seeking comment, and Lions Coach Jim Schwartz announced only that Harrison was placed on the reserve/non-football illness list.
The tumor was discovered during a physical that nullified Harrison's trade to the Philadelphia Eagles.
Schwartz said he visited Harrison at the hospital Friday morning.
"He was in very good spirits," Schwartz remarked. "But after that, I don't know if I want to talk too much. It's one of those things, it's a non-football thing, and I'll just let him take it away from that spot."
Polamalu among players fined
Pittsburgh safety Troy Polamalu was fined $10,000 by the league for talking on a cellphone while in the bench area in last Sunday's win over Jacksonville. Steelers Coach Mike Tomlin said Polamalu was calling his wife to assure her he wasn't seriously injured. He sustained what the team called a "very mild" concussion and was removed from the game as a precaution.
Other players fined by the league included: Green Bay Packers linebacker A.J. Hawk ($10,000) for an obscene gesture during last week's win over St. Louis; fellow Packers Clay Matthews ($5,000) and Tramon Williams ($5,000) for wearing nonconforming shoes with their throwback uniforms; Washington Redskins linebacker Brian Orakpo ($15,000) for roughing the passer with a helmet-to-helmet hit on Philadelphia's Michael Vick; and Houston Texans defensive end Antonio Smith ($7,500) for unnecessary roughness.
Kreutz to end career
Center Olin Kreutz, 34, has told the New Orleans Saints that his playing days are over, informing the team that he has lost his passion for football, according to his agent. Earlier this week, Kreutz met with Saints General Manager Mickey Loomis and Coach Sean Payton.
Though Payton wouldn't discuss what was talked about in that meeting, he said there had been no hint that this was the decision Kreutz would eventually make.
Sam Bradford missed practice again Friday, raising the possibility that A.J. Feeley will start at quarterback Sunday when the St. Louis Rams play in Dallas. … Pittsburgh Steelers center Maurkice Pouncey, whose left elbow was heavily wrapped after practice, said he has dealt with pain the past two days but will start Sunday at Arizona.
