In Santa Cruz, whales make a picture-perfect appearance

Sure, the Santa Cruz County Conference & Visitors Council is in the business of promoting its wonders to visitors through words and pictures, but even the most brilliant spin doctor couldn’t have arranged the photo above.

On Tuesday, during a photo assignment for the council on Monterey Bay, photographer Paul Schraub captured this photo of a couple of humpback whales spy hopping (whale lingo for coming out of the water vertically and checking out the surroundings) next to a kayaker. Schraub was about 100 feet away and was using a Nikon D700 with a 180mm lens.

“He thought it was spectacular at the time but didn’t realize the magnitude of the shot until he was back in his studio,”  Christina Glynn, the communications director and  film commission for the council, said in an email.

The council is using the photo on its newly created whale watching page, Glynn said. Good timing and well done.
