Cam Newton seems ready for next wave of fame, commercialism

April 21, 2012|By Dan Loumena

Cam Newton, the Carolina Panthers' prized quarterback and last season's NFL offensive rookie of the year, appears poised to have another stellar season on the football field.

Panthers Coach Ron Rivera saw the 6-foot-5, 245-pounder recently and said he seemed to have changed.

"I had a chance to visit with him briefly, and he seems like a different person," Rivera said. "He seems more mature, in terms of ready to take some leadership roles."

That's not good news for teams in the NFC South. Newton established several rookie passing and quarterback rushing records last season, including 4,051 yards passing to easily surpass Peyton Manning's previous record of 3,739.

And as you can see from the video above, he's branching out from his Under Armor commercials to join the Gatorade clan.
