There will be new men's beach volleyball champions at the Olympics.

The defending gold medalists, the U.S. team of Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers, were ousted by Italians Daniele Lupo and Paolo Nicolai in two sets, 21-17, 21-19, in the round of 16 on Friday.

This was the knockout round following pool play.

Dalhausser and Rogers staged a strong rally to pull even in the second set, at 19 all, but dropped the final two points and were sent out of the tournament.

On the women's side, U.S. duo Jennifer Kessy and April Ross continued to play well, defeating the Swiss team of Simone Kuhn and Nadine Zumkehr, 21-15, 21-19.
