'Broken' is named best British independent film of 2012

The coming-of-age drama "Broken" won the British Independent Film Award for 2012's best British independent film Sunday evening in London.

Rory Kinnear also won best supporting actor for "Broken."

"Berberian Sound Studio," a psychological thriller that takes place on an Italian horror film set in the 1970s, won best director for Peter Strickland, best actor for Toby Jones, best achievement in production and best technical achievement.

Andrea Riseborough was named best actress for "Shadow Dancer" and Olivia Wilde received the BIFA for supporting actress for "Hyde Park on the Hudson."

"The Imposter" was selected as the best British documentary and also picked up the Douglas Hickox Award for directorial debut for Bart Layton. Alice Lowe, Steve Oram and Amy Jump won screenplay honors for "Sightseers," and James Floyd earned the most promising newcomer award for "My Brother the Devil."

The Danish drama "The Hunt" won best international independent film.

The best short award went to "Volume," while "Strings" received the Raindance Award.

Michael Gambon was given the Richard Harris Award for outstanding contribution by an actor to British film and Jude Law received the Variety Award, which recognizes an actor, director, writer or producer who has helped to "focus the international spotlight on the U.K."

Sandra Hebron, the former artistic director of the BFI London Film Festival, was the recipient of the Special Jury Prize.

Actor James Nesbitt hosted the ceremony, which took place at Old Billingsgate in London. Mike Figgis, Ewan McGregor, Helen Miren, Michael Sheen and Tilda Swinton were among the presenters.
