Google Maps might make its long-awaited return to the iPhone and the iPad on Wednesday night, according to a report.

All Things D says unnamed sources have confirmed Google Inc. plans to release its Maps app for Apple's iOS mobile operating system Wenesday night.

If that is indeed the case, there will probably be many happy iPhone users.

QUIZ: How much do you know about Google?

They have had to deal with Apple Maps since the Cupertino, Calif., company gave the pre-installed Google Maps app the boot in mid-September with the release of iOS 6.

IPhone users quickly became frustrated because Apple Maps didn't seem to provide nearly as much information as Google Maps, its "Flyover" 3-D imaging feature didn't work correctly and commonly gave inaccurate information.

It's been so bad, police in Australia issued a note this week urging drivers not to use the app because it had been stranding people trying to get to the city of Mildura in the middle of a national park.

Soon after the release of iOS 6 and Apple Maps, Apple Chief Executive Tim Cook issued an apology on behalf of the company.

"At Apple, we strive to make world-class products that deliver the best experience possible to our customers," Cook said in his apology. "With the launch of our new Maps last week, we fell short on this commitment."
