London Olympics: What to watch for on Tuesday

July 31, 2012|By John Cherwa

There are seemingly hundreds of events each day at the Olympics. Here is what to watch out for Tuesday:

SWIMMING

It’s back to the Michael Phelps-Ryan Lochte show, but not against each other. Phelps will be going for his third straight gold in the 200 butterfly. He won his heat Monday but had the fourth-fastest time. It shouldn’t matter when he gets in the pool. In the other marquee event-- the men’s 800  freestyle relay-- both Phelps and Lochte are on the same team.

WOMEN’S GYMNASTICS

The U.S. men fell flat on their face with a disappointing fifth-place finish. Now it’s up to the women to redeem the U.S. program. Like the men, they finished the qualifying in first place. But none of those scores carry over, so it’s every team for itself. The U.S. will find tough competition from Russia, China, Romania and Britain. Yes, all those teams.

MEN’S  BASKETBALL

It’s hard to make the Dream Team games interesting but people still love to watch them. Tuesday’s game is against Tunisia so there won’t be much suspense. But still, how Coach K manages the minutes can be interesting to watch. Don’t expect a lot of effort out of Kobe Bryant. Chris Paul is only interested in assists. So that leaves Kevin Durant to star again.

SHOOTING

Believe it or not, shooting is back in the spotlight as the U.S. looks to pick up its second gold medal. Vincent Hancock hit 74 of 75 targets in skeet qualifying Monday. Now he comes back for some morning qualifying and then the finals in the afternoon. He stands a good chance as he also won gold in Beijing. He would join Kim Rhode as the other U.S. gold medalist in shooting in these Games.
