The Lakers began a dialogue with the representative for point guard Ramon Sessions shortly after free agency began Saturday night, though a contract agreement wasn't reached.
Sessions became an unrestricted free agent last week after declining a one-year player option for $4.55 million.
He was acquired by the Lakers last March at the trade deadline and averaged 12.7 points and 6.2 assists in the regular season.
Sessions struggled in the playoffs, however, averaging 9.7 points and 3.6 assists.
If Sessions, 26, does not return to the Lakers, there's a chance they go into next season with Steve Blake as their starting point guard.
Lakers General Manager Mitch Kupchak recently said Sessions' decision to decline the player option created a degree of uncertainty.
“Both sides have to absorb some risk,” Kupchak said. “I’m not quite sure if he’s completely aware of what the future holds for him. We have to plan for the contingency that he won’t be available as a free agent.”
