Beverly Hills subway video: Two thumbs up for explosions!

May 07, 2012|By Dan Turner

So who's behind the MTA's evil scheme? Certainly not the multiple teams of top engineers, geologists and seismologists who studied the local faults and analyzed station locations on behalf of the MTA. Nor the nationally renowned team of experts who independently confirmed their findings that the option favored by Beverly Hills -- building a station on Santa Monica Boulevard, which wouldn't require tunneling under the high school -- isn't feasible because of an earthquake fault running down Santa Monica. Actually, none of these people or findings are mentioned in the video. Instead, we're told that the strings of the MTA board are being pulled by JMB Realty, a developer that's building high-rises in Century City near the Constellation station.

I can't answer for the MTA board, but after the Beverly Hills Courier published a screed against the Los Angeles Times claiming that our recent editorial urging the city to stop delaying the subway was influenced by JMB -- under the Courier's bizarre logic, JMB pulls our strings because it's based in Chicago, which also happens to be the headquarters of Times owner Tribune Co. -- all I can say is that somewhere along the line, logic, perspective, rationality and common sense loaded up the truck and moved out of Beverly Hills.
