  • Kyle Schuneman, taking a break at right while decorating a guest room at the House of Rock in Santa Monica, is traveling the country to promote his new book, "The First Apartment Book: Cool Design for Small Spaces." Among the book's most popular projects with readers: turning an old, unloved book into a miniature pot.

"The First Apartment Book" sent its creator, Los Angeles designer Kyle Schuneman, to book-release parties in Chicago and New York, but Schuneman is back in town for a local signing Thursday.

The book, subtitled "Cool Design for Small Spaces," emancipates the post-dormitory crowd from bed-in-a-bag decor and encourages first-time decorators to create a personal aesthetic, even if on a shoestring.

Ten of Schuneman's apartment makeovers and dozens of clever DIY design projects are featured, including three stylish ideas previously posted featured on L.A. at Home. (See related links.)

In a recent email exchange, I asked Schuneman which of his book's ideas had generated the most buzz among readers. He replied: "People seem to really love the box-spring chandelier project that I created for a couple in Nashville and the book planter project in the Bohemian chapter."

The latter, Schuneman noted, is appropriate given that his L.A. appearance will be at Rolling Greens, the indoor-outdoor decor store at 7505 Beverly Blvd. The decorator will be there from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday. The store asks that you RSVP to Schuneman also shares DIY design tips on Twitter, @KyleSchuneman.
