A peek inside Target store in downtown L.A. opening Oct. 14

The Target store in downtown Los Angeles is opening on Sunday in the Fig at 7th retail center.

The 104,000-square-foot store, one of the retailer’s smaller-footprint CityTarget locations, will serve as the anchor for one of the neighborhood’s biggest shopping centers currently undergoing a $40-million renovation.

Although there’s still construction going on, come Sunday, shoppers will be able to descend from the busy sidewalks down a grand staircase to the store’s entrance.    

Inside, many of the store’s 250 red-shirted workers were buzzing around one recent weekday loading shelves, putting together displays and lining up for a caffeine jolt at the Starbucks inside that is already up and running. A digital board at the entrance will relay info such as the weather and weekly deals.

Like other CityTargets, the downtown store caters to a decidedly urban customer with an expanded collection of items for apartment living along with a broad assortment of food and produce, including more Latino options. The store also has more stationery items for office workers, but devotes less real estate to departments such as toys and sporting goods.

“You may not need camping gear, but if you don’t have a three bedroom downtown you might need air mattresses for your guests who are visiting,” said Target group Vice President Carmen Moch.  Hence, the wide selection of air mattresses.

The bulk of shoppers will consist of downtown workers during the weekdays and city residents on weekends, Moch said.

“People on the way in will pop in to get Starbucks or a phone charger, or come in midday to grab lunch,” she said.  “Or when they’re heading to the bus or train, they’ll come in to pick up a nice bottle of wine.”

The store comes equipped with free Wi-Fi to allow shoppers to browse the online Target store and order anything that can't be found at the downtown shop.

One final convenience for city shoppers -- parcel service. Shoppers who have bought a lot of items can get workers to bring their purchases down to a designated spot in the parking garage, where they can be picked up later by car.

The store opens Oct. 14 at 8 a.m. Normal hours will be 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekdays and 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekends.
