Yasiel Puig won't play in the Arizona Fall League

Top outfield prospect Yasiel Puig underwent a surgical procedure to clean out an infected right elbow last month, the team announced Tuesday.

Puig is no longer expected to play in the Arizona Fall League, as was previously planned.

A 21-year-old Cuban defector, Puig signed a seven-year, $42-million contract with the Dodgers in June. After only nine games in the Arizona rookie league, he was promoted to high-A Rancho Cucamonga, where he hit .327 with one home run and 14 runs batted in in 14 games.

Puig developed a non-MRSA staph infection in the back of his elbow, according to the Dodgers. The initial treatment of oral antibiotics was unsuccessful, leading him to undergo a minor operation on Sept. 18. Puig’s elbow will remain immobilized until Oct. 15.

The anticipated timetable for a full recovery is three to five weeks from the time of the surgery. He will remain at the team’s spring training facility in Arizona until he regains full range and strength in his elbow.

Puig is expected to be in the Dodgers’ major league camp for spring training.
