Two-time Oscar-winning actor Dustin Hoffman ("Kramer vs. Kramer," "Rain Man") is the recipient of the Hollywood Film Awards' Hollywood Breakthrough Director Award.

After decades as an actor, Hoffman makes his feature directorial debut with "Quartet," opening in limited released on Dec. 28. The film stars Maggie Smith, Tom Courtenay, Pauline Collins, Billy Connolly and Michael Gambon. Hoffman had previously planned to direct the 1978 film "Straight Time," in which he starred, but turned the directing reins over to Ulu Grosbard.

"It is a great honor to recognize Dustin Hoffman for his directorial debut for the movie 'Quartet,'" Carlos de Abreu, founder and executive director of the Hollywood Film Awards, said in a statement Monday.  "His exquisite work and directorial skills are remarkable."

Hoffman will receive the honor at a gala Oct. 22 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.
