WWE champion CM Punk uses a kendo stick across the chest of Ryback as referee… (WWE )
On Sunday night, WWE's latest pay-per-view, "Hell in a Cell" took place, and intrigue was huge over it, with fans wondering what would happen in the main event between champion CM Punk, who has held the title for almost a year and is penciled in to defend it against Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson at the Royal Rumble in January, and challenger Ryback, who has not lost since returning to the WWE after sitting out over a year with injuries. A look at what happened:
Randy Orton vs. Alberto Del Rio
Orton won with the RKO in one of the better matches on the card.
Kane and Daniel Bryan (tag-team champions) vs. Cody Rhodes and Damien Sandow
Rhodes & Sandow won via DQ after Kane refused to listen to the ref and destroyed Rhodes and Sandow. More dissension between Kane and Bryan, who argue with each other constantly but defend each other whenever anyone else tries to attack them.
Kofi Kingston (Intercontinental champion) vs. the Miz
Kingston pinned Miz after hitting his Trouble in Paradise finisher.
Antonio Cesaro (U.S. champion) vs. Justin Gabriel
Crowd couldn't have cared less about this match. Cesaro won after hitting his finishing move, the Neutralizer.
Rey Mysterio and Sin Cara vs. the Prime Time Players
Mysterio pinned Darren Young for the win. Scary moment in the match came when Sin Cara did a flip dive over the top rope and landed on his head outside the ring. Medical personnel worked on him but he appeared to be OK when the match ended.
Sheamus (World heavyweight champion) vs. Big Show
Big Show won the title with the knockout punch. Crowd seemed disappointed that Dolph Ziggler did not cash in his Money in the Bank briefcase after the match.
Eve Torres (Divas champion) vs. Layla vs. Kaitlyn
Eve pinned Layla to retain the title.
CM Punk (WWE champion) vs. Ryback in a steel cage
Referee Brad Maddox, who was the ref a few weeks ago when John Cena pinned Punk despite Punk having his foot on the ropes, was the official for this match, which immediately raised "angle alert" alarms to fans watching.
Ryback had Punk up for his finisher when Maddox gave Ryback a low blow. Punk immediately covered Ryback and Maddox fast-counted him for the pin. So, Punk retains, Ryback loses but in such an underhanded fashion that he can claim he is still unbeaten, and they bring a new person, Maddox, into the mix.
After the match, Punk climbed on top of the cage to escape Ryback, who climbed up after him and gave him his "Shell Shock" finisher on top of the cage. If the top of the cage had broken, like it did when Undertaker and Mick Foley wrestled on top of it years ago, both guys could have been killed.
It will be interesting to see the fallout of all of this on "Monday Night Raw" tonight.
