When the Dodgers acquired Adrian Gonzalez, they inherited a contract that binds him to the team through 2018 at a cost of $125 million. That will give him plenty of chances to make his mark in team history, and he will do so wearing a number that has left its mark in team history.

By the end of his career, where might Gonzalez rank on the list of Dodgers to wear uniform No. 23? For now, here's how they rank, according to Times staff writer Bill Shaikin:

1: Kirk Gibson (1988-90): Immortality with one mighty swing and one hobbled trot.

2. Claude Osteen (1965-73): Two-time 20-game winner, three-time All-Star in shadows of Sandy Koufax and Don Drysdale. Earned-run average in three World Series starts: 0.86.

3. Eric Karros (1991-02): Duke Snider is the franchise home run leader with 389; Karros is the L.A. leader with 270. Never an All-Star.

4. Jimmy Wynn (1974-75): The "Toy Cannon" hit 32 home runs to lead 1974 Dodgers to World Series." Dodgers acquired him from the Houston Astros for Osteen.

5. Don Zimmer (1954-59, 1963): Hit 17 home runs, two more than Snider, in Dodgers' debut season in L.A. in 1958.
