"Italians in California Agriculture: The Case of the Artichoke": Los Angeles Times Food Editor Russ Parsons will give a talk on artichokes at the Istituto Italiano di Cultura. There will be a five-course tasting menu (seated buffet) that will showcase the artichoke, with dishes such as the carpaccio di carciofi (carpaccio of artichoke), risotto con carciofi e menta (artichoke risotto and mint) and carciofini al forno (baked baby artichokes). The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf’s “Trade Up Your Cup”: To celebrate National Coffee Day on Sept. 29, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. (or while supplies last), the Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf is holding a "Trade Up Your Cup" event where guests can bring in their new or used coffee makers to trade in for a new CBTL Kaldi Machine (*limited to the Kaldi model available in black, white, red and blue and valued at $179.95, limit one CBTL Kaldi Machine per person, while supplies last). Brunch is served at Tortilla Republic: The modern Mexican restaurant will begin brunch service on Saturdays and Sundays starting Sept 29. Menu items include huevos divorciados (poached eggs, tomatillo ranchero sauce, bacon, black beans, tortilla strips and queso fresco); torta de huevo (fried egg, brioche bun, bacon, cheddar, arugula and breakfast potatoes); and a slew of cocktails such as the spicy bloody Maria and the prickly pear Bellini. (310) 657-9888 616 N. Picca introduces new fall cocktails: Picca will introduce its new fall cocktail lineup during a late-night celebration Sept 27 from 9:30 p.m. to midnight. Mixologist Julian Cox has created six new drinks featuring boutique spirits, fruit liqueurs and Peruvina produce. The new libations include the Deconstructing Hector (pear-infused Blanc Vermouth, Combier Pamplemousse, Blanco tequila and lime juice) and the Insane Bolt (Smith and Cross rum, Luxardo Maraschino, Angostura bitters, orgeat and lime juice.) Break the fast at Susan Feniger's Street: Whether you're breaking the Yom Kippur fast this week or just looking for a globally inspired meal, Street is offering a special menu Sept. 26 that highlights  Jewish favorites. Dominick's new "5 o'Clock Meeting" menu: Dominick's will open early for its take on parlour hour beginning Sept. 24. From 5 to 7 p.m. Monday to Friday at the bar, the restaurant will offer $6 wines by the glass, $4 beers and $6 to $8 cocktail specials. The restaurant will also offer small bite specials, including  oysters and meatballs for $1.50. Dominick's new fall hours are 5 to 11 p.m. Sunday to Thursday and 5 p.m. to 1 a.m. Friday and Saturday.
