Residents who live near the 405 Freeway knew full well when they decided to buy their homes that they would be subjected to a barrage of noise, including the constant roar of the freeway day and night and a full orchestra of beeping construction trucks and the "booms and clatters echoing against the metal sides." The residents figured the homes they bought featuring swimming pools, tree-shaded gardens and striped basketball courts were enough of an exchange to combat the noise they face on a daily basis.
Well, I've got news for them. Nobody forced these people to buy their homes. Living next to a freeway, you are going to hear noise. A lot of it.
You either get used to it or you move. After all, the freeway was here first.
