Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies shot a man carrying a spray paint can after they say he reached into his waistband and acted suspiciously, officials said Thursday.

The shooting occurred about 11:40 p.m. Wednesday near Everett Avenue and East 58th Street in Maywood. Deputies were responding to a vandalism call in the area when they confronted a man and woman.

Authorities say the 31-year-old man acted “suspiciously and reached for his waistband, resulting in a deputy-involved shooting.”

The man was taken to the hospital and is expected to survive. Deputies found a spray paint can in the man’s pocket, but no weapon.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call the Sheriff’s Department homicide bureau at (323) 890-5500.
