Jason Collins may have spent just 32 games of his 14-year NBA career in a Boston uniform, but the city is stepping up to support the former Celtics center who made a historic announcement Monday.

In an interview with Sports Illustrated, Collins revealed that he is gay, thus becoming the first active male athlete in a major American sport to come out of the closet.

Collins has been receiving an overwhelming amount of support from the athletic community, including this tweet from the Boston Red Sox:

Collins signed with the Celtics as a free agent last summer and averaged 10.3 minutes, 1.2 points and 1.6 rebounds a game before being traded to the Washington Wizards with Leandro Barbosa for Jordan Crawford in February.

So while he may not yet know where — or if — he will be playing basketball again, Collins knows he's welcome on the mound at Fenway if he chooses to take the Red Sox up on their offer.
