The outstanding campaign debt racked up by former Los Angeles mayoral candidate Wendy Greuel has climbed past $680,000, according to new reports submitted to the city Ethics Commission.

Greuel, who lost to Eric Garcetti in the May 21 mayoral runoff, had reported more than $518,000 in unpaid bills accumulated during the final weeks of the campaign. But she also has more than $162,000 in outstanding debt left over from the March 5 primary campaign, according to the filing from a second Greuel campaign committee.

Both reports cover the fundraising period ending June 30. Greuel's lawyer, Stephen Kaufman, has said she is "continuing to work on retiring her debt.”

Garcetti took office July 1. Both of his fundraising committees, one for the primary campaign and one for the runoff, have a combined debt of nearly $96,000, according to the reports.

Bill Carrick, Garcetti’s political consultant, said the mayor had already raised most of the money needed to pay that debt off.
