The Philadelphia Eagles excused Riley Cooper from all team activities Friday as the wide receiver dealt with the repercussions of being caught on video making a racial slur. Cooper has been sent away from the team to get help with his issues, something upon which the player and the team agreed.

Coach Chip Kelly made it clear after Friday's practice, however, that Cooper would be back with the team when he's ready. "There has never been any question of cutting Riley," Kelly said.

Cooper said the last few days have been incredibly difficult, and he will seek counseling. "My actions were inexcusable," he said. "The more I think about what I did, the more disgusted I get. I keep trying to figure out how I could have said something so repulsive, and what I can do to make things better."

Lochte gets two golds

Ryan Lochte won the 200-meter backstroke, posted the fastest time in the semifinals of the 100 butterfly, and put the Americans ahead to stay with a strong leg in the 800 freestyle relay, all in less than two hours in the world swimming championships at Barcelona, Spain. No one could find a record of anyone competing in three races in the same session at either the worlds or the Olympics. Missy Franklin ended a run of four straight victories, finishing fourth in the 100 freestyle behind gold medalist Cate Campbell of Australia. Franklin came back about 25 minutes later to easily post the top qualifying time in the semifinals of the 200 backstroke.

Jimmie Johnson needed multiple attempts to make it through the pre-qualifying inspection, then set a track record with a lap of 180.654 mph to win the pole for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race Sunday at Pocono Raceway at Long Pond, Pa. Kyle Busch will start second and Carl Edwards third. Johnson went 29th instead of his scheduled 24th spot, and the later start under the clouds as the track got faster may have given him an advantage over the cars that went out under the sun.

IndyCar adopted new guidelines that will take effect with the Indy 200 at Mid-Ohio this weekend in Lexington, Ohio. Among them: When there is a restart with 15 or fewer laps remaining all lapped cars will move to the back of the field.
