RAMALLAH, West Bank – One Palestinian was shot to death and three others wounded by Israeli soldiers Tuesday in the northern West Bank city of Jenin, according to a Palestinian official.

Talal Dweikat, Palestinian Authority governor of Jenin, said an army unit entered a Jenin refugee camp in a search and arrest campaign and was confronted by local residents. He said the soldiers opened fire, killing Majd Lahlouh, 22, and injuring three others who were reported to be in moderate condition.

The Associated Press quoted Israeli army spokesman Peter Lerner saying that the soldiers fired after they came under fire during a raid in Jenin. He said that two soldiers were wounded when Palestinians attacked with gunfire, improvised explosives and rocks.

Palestinians said residents confronted the army unit when it raided the camp in an attempt to make arrests.  Medics at a Jenin hospital said Lahlouh was brought in with a gunshot to the chest and was pronounced dead on arrival.
