Letters: Speaking up for Echo Park

August 28, 2013

Re “Echo Park and its gangs,” Editorial, Aug. 18

As a 20-year plus resident of Echo Park, I wonder why a gang injunction is being proposed now? The early 1990s maybe, but now?

I have always felt safe in this neighborhood. We walked our daughters to elementary school for nine years, communing with the same crossing guard, local vendors and neighbors.

I have walked the lake for all these years, getting to know the regulars, including Maria (or Mario) the goose. Part of the beauty of the neighborhood is its diversity.

If violence is the fear, let's encourage our City Council to invest in local nonprofits that help people involved in gangs get their lives back on track.

These are the efforts that work; gang injunctions don't.
