Did Will Ferrell star in the least-viewed Super Bowl ad?

February 04, 2013|By Patrick Kevin Day

Though the final audience numbers for the 2013 Super Bowl have not been tallied, it's already setting ratings records, according to CBS. But while the commercials, from Budweiser's tear-jerking Clydesdales to Go Daddy's shocking kiss, were seen by a huge percentage of that total audience, there was one ad, starring Will Ferrell of all people, that got, by far, the smallest viewership of the night.

Ferrell's ad for Old Milwaukee beer aired in just three markets: Sherman, Texas; Ardmore, Okla., and Glendive, Mont., making it one of the least-viewed major commercials during the Super Bowl.

TIMELINE: Best Super Bowl commercials

In the ad, Ferrell, wearing a basketball jersey reminiscent of his character from the 2008 film "Semi-Pro" makes out extensively with an older Asian woman on a bus. The only nod to the beer being sold is a brief glimpse of a six-pack of Old Milwaukee in a bag at the front of the bus.

It's not the first time Ferrell has done this kind of thing. Last year, he filmed a different ad for Old Milwaukee that aired during the Super Bowl in just one market: North Platte, Neb.

Ferrell has filmed several ads for Old Milwaukee, though he has said in interviews that he gets paid nothing for the spots. Instead, he enjoys the creative freedom (and the beer).

And this isn't the only Super Bowl ad to feature extensive making out. Many eyebrows were raised by Go Daddy's ad featuring Israeli supermodel Bar Rafaeli graphically making out with a stereotypical nerd. Love is in the air.
