When Alex Collins, a star running back at South Plantation High in Florida, decided to sign a letter of intent to go to Arkansas during National Signing Day on Wednesday, his mother, Andrea McDonald, was unhappy.
She was so unhappy, she took the letter of intent away and left the house. She wanted her son to go to Miami so he could stay close to her. Eventually, Collins' father, Johnny Collins, stepped in, and Alex Collins signed and faxed his letter intent to Arkansas on Thursday. End of the matter, right? Wrong.
Also on Thursday, McDonald hired an attorney with the Cochran firm to represent the family "while she contemplates" where her son plays football in college. She is hoping to get the letter of intent voided and have her son attend Miami, like she wants.
Collins signed his papers during a small news conference with his father. They both briefly talked about McDonald.
"Let him go," said Johnny Collins. "Let him go."
Meanwhile, Alex Collins says he understands where his mom is coming from, even though she hasn't answered his phone calls for the last day.
