South Africa's police chief, Riah Phiyega, appointed her top detective as the new lead investigator in the Oscar Pistorius murder case after the disclosure the initial investigator, Hilton Botha, was facing attempted murder charges.

Phiyega said Thursday that Lt. Gen. Vinesh Moonoo will take over the investigation.

"The Pistorius case shall receive attention at the national level and Moonoo will gather a team of highly skilled and experienced detectives,” Phiyega said.

It was revealed earlier Thursday that attempted murder charges were brought against Botha in relation to a 2011 shooting incident, when he allegedly fired shots at a minibus.

In the Botha case, he and three other police officers were allegedly drunk when they attempted to stop the minibus, which was carrying seven passengers, by shooting at it.
