LQ "Foodings": Laurent Quenioux brings his LQ "Foodings" event to Vertical Wine Bistro in Pasadena, where he also happens to be cheffing. LQ @ Vertical takes place on select Sundays and Mondays in February. And with it comes his famed cheese cart, laden with 30 unpasteurized cheeses from France. The six-course menu is $48 per person and includes: lamb heart tartare, with razor clam congee and sea snail karaage roll; parsnip soup with Carlsbad oyster, smoked dashi gelee and American paddlefish roe; fresh anchovies with chorizo hushpuppies; Chinese lion peppers and duck leg confit with duck gizzards, tongues and hearts -- and apricot seed dust; trotters and tails pot pie; and bay leaves 'n' cloves ice cream with pears, Roquefort and green lentil jam. Sunday, Feb. 10; Monday, Feb. 11; Sunday, Feb. 24; and Monday, Feb. 25; seatings from 5:30 to 9 p.m. Reservations are available online. 70 N. Raymond Ave., Pasadena, (626) 795-3999, www.verticalwinebistro.com.

Hinoki & the Bird: The long-awaited Century City restaurant from David Myers, Hinoki & the Bird, opens today for dinner. Executive chef Kuniko Yagi, who appears in the latest season of "Top Chef," is helming the kitchen, focusing on the flavors of Southeast Asia and Japan. The menu includes bites and starters such as chili crab toast and fried oysters, raw bar items such as oysters and scallops, grilled meats including Wagyu strip loin and apple marinated short rib, and entrees that feature Yagi's creative flair -- hinoki scented black cod with sweet potato and pistachio, coconut-curried mussels with sausage and cauliflower, and black lobster roll with green curry and Thai chiles. Cocktails were created by Sam Ross. 10 W. Century Drive, Los Angeles, (310) 552-1200, www.hinokiandthebird.com.

Carmela Ice Cream: The artisan ice cream maker announces it will open a second location on West 3rd Street at Fairfax Avenue, near the Grove, within the next few weeks. Jessica Mortarotti and Zach Cox opened the first Carmela store in Pasadena two years ago and continue to sell at farmers markets, featuring flavors such as Meyer lemon olive oil, brown butter sage, strawberry buttermilk, lavender honey, and orange vanilla bean. 7920 W. 3rd St., Los Angeles, www.carmelaicecream.com.
