Coach John Harbaugh and the Ravens enter the Super Bowl as the underdogs,… (Nick Wass / Associated Press )
Sporting books have reported that nearly two-thirds of the bettors are taking the underdog Baltimore Ravens over the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl XLVII on Feb. 3.
So much money has been placed on the Ravens that the point spread has shifted from 5 to 3½ points. And this appears to be a smart bet. The over/under for combined points in the game has fallen from as high as 50 to 47½ as well.
Here's why: This postseason the favored teams are 8-2 with the Ravens bucking the odds each time.
FYI: R.J. Bell of Pregame.com predicted that approximately $10 billion will be wagered on the Ravens-49ers game, by far the largest amount bet on any single event, with only the NCAA tournament collectively taking more in wagers.
"This is kind of a surprise -- 65% of the bets so far have been on the underdog Ravens," said Bell on Colin Cowherd's ESPN radio show Friday morning. "That's very unusual in the NFL."
Bell went on to note that the 49ers have been the favorites now in all six of their Super Bowl appearances.
