David Beckham back on the field with Arsenal

January 29, 2013|By Kevin Baxter

David Beckham may be getting serious about resuming his soccer career.

Or maybe he's just really bored.

Either way, the former Galaxy midfielder trained with Arsenal on Tuesday and plans to keep working out with the English Premier League team for the next two to three weeks

Wearing a purple short-sleeve Arsenal training jersey, Beckham spent part of the his workout session smiling and shaking hands with players and coaches before going through his paces with the rest of the team. Beckham's participation in the workout came after the former England captain called Arsenal Manager Arsene Wenger and asked if he could train with his team. Wenger said he quickly approved of the idea,  hoping that the 37-year-old Beckham can teach his young players something.

"He is here early in the morning and the young English players always look at him and take his advice on board," Wenger told the Daily Mail. "He told me he has not done anything since he stopped at L.A. Galaxy. I don't believe that. I was surprised. But maybe he wanted to get a bit away from it. He is 37 as well, you know."

Wenger didn't think Beckham was close to returning to the pitch full time -- at least not in the Premier League.

"Beckham is super-ambitious. If in his mind he wanted to play in the Premier League he would not have gone on holiday, he would have prepared and come in and tried to impress me," Wenger said. "But he wants to get fit again. He is a sportsman and maybe in June he has plans to play somewhere, maybe take three or four months off and prepare for next season."

According to the Mail, Beckham arrived at Arsenal's training camp in a chauffeur-driven Bentley and was handed a kit with the No. 29 vacated by Marouane Chamakh, who is on loan at West Ham. It is his third training spell with the Gunners since he moved to Los Angeles to join the Galaxy in 2007.

At least two Premier League clubs have expressed interest in Beckham, who hasn't played since helping the Galaxy win its second consecutive MLS Cup on Dec. 1.

Beckham's eldest son, Brooklyn, had a tryout with an academy team associated with another London-based EPL team, Chelsea, last week.
