TEMPE, Ariz. -- Closer Ryan Madson pitched off a mound for the first time in six weeks Monday, throwing 20 pitches in a short bullpen session.

Madson said he threw only fastballs and at about half-speed.

Madson, signed as a free agent in November, missed all of last season after undergoing Tommy John surgery. He will almost certainly start the season on the disabled list.

"He looked good, really good," said catcher John Hester, who caught Madson on Monday. "The ball was coming out of his hand good."

Reliever Sean Burnett, who is also on the mend, threw about 25 pitches to five batters on Sunday and said his sore back is fine.

Burnett could make his spring debut with the Angels on Wednesday.
